Tompkins Square (Fontana/Universal) recording artist Ruth Gerson is currently writing and recording a new album with producer Nic Hard (The Bravery, Aberdeen City) tentatively entitled This Can’t Be My Life. Ruth is also working on an album of traditional American folk songs with producer Rick Chertoff (Cyndi Lauper, Joan Osbourne), including renditions of “Knoxville Girl”, “Mary From the Wild Moor”, “The Butcher Boy”, and “Down From Dover”, among others. Gerson has also recently signed on to compose music for a documentary on Lowney Handy and the Handy Writers’ Colony, an Illinois-based enclave that nurtured writers throughout the ‘40s, ‘50s and early ‘60s, including James Jones ( From Here To Eternity) and Charles Wright. The film is produced by Dawn Sinclair Shapiro.
Ruth will begin touring to promote her first Tompkins Square release this spring, including many living room concerts among other venues. Her most recent album, Wake To Echo (2003), produced by John Cale-collaborator Lance Doss, is a collection of strong melodies, passionate vocal performances and deeply personal lyrics which garnered praise from Billboard, The New York Times, Harp, and Performing Songwriter, to name a few. It was her first full-length studio release since 1998’s Fools and Kings, produced by Don Dixon (REM).
Ruth has appeared on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien,” The Newport Folk Festival, SXSW, Pitea Dansar Och Ler (Sweden), ARTSCAPE, The Tel Aviv Annual Piano Fest, High Sierra Music Festival, Sotto Le Stella (Italy) & CMJ. She has toured Europe, most extensively throughout Italy, where she landed a lead acting role in AMKA’s Swiss/Italian-produced film Promised Land, starring Chad Smith, Lalaine, Giuseppe Cederna & Patrick Bauchau. The film premiered at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland in 2004 and was released in European theaters in October of 2005.
In 2005, Ruth raised $60, 000 for various charities via her living room concert series. Proceeds from Ruth’s performances were donated to charities selected by each concert host, including Chicago’s Umoja Student Development Corporation, AIDCHILD, The Humane Society, YMCA Strong Kids Program and San Francisco General Hospitals’ Child & Adolescent Services.
Having sold tens of thousands of CDs independently via shows, www.ruthgerson.com, and through small distributors, Gerson’s upcoming releases will be distributed in the U.S. via Fontana/Universal.
A mother of two daughters, Ruth Gerson is a native New Yorker and lives in the East Village.
